Precision Medicine Is Changing Cancer Care

Cancer treatment has advanced significantly, but one hard truth remains: many treatment decisions are still based on probabilities, not certainty.
Even with targeted therapies and genomics, oncologists often rely on clinical averages when selecting treatments. That works for many patients, but it also means some therapies may not be effective for an individual’s unique tumor biology.
In a recent episode of Med Tech Gurus, Tom Hickey spoke with Jim Foote, CEO and Founder of First Ascent Biomedical, about how Functional Precision Medicine (FPM) may help change that.
Foote sums up the vision clearly:
Move cancer treatment from “try and hope” to “test and know.”

Why This MattersCancer is not one disease.
What we call breast, lung, or prostate cancer actually includes many biological variations and subtypes. Two patients with the same diagnosis may respond very differently to the same therapy.
Traditional oncology has relied on population-based clinical data to establish standard treatment pathways. But every patient is different, and that is why personalized treatment is becoming more important.
What Is Functional Precision Medicine?Functional Precision Medicine helps determine which therapies are most likely to work for an individual patient before treatment begins.
This approach combines:
  • Functional drug testing to see how a patient’s tumor responds to therapies
  • Genomic analysis to identify mutations and active pathways
  • Artificial intelligence to analyze patterns and rank likely treatment options
Together, these tools give physicians more useful information when making treatment decisions.
The Role of AIAI helps process large amounts of biological data quickly and efficiently.
It does not replace the physician. Instead, it helps doctors better understand which therapies may be most effective for a specific patient.
That is a major step toward more personalized, data-driven oncology care.
A Mission Born From ExperienceFor Jim Foote, this work is deeply personal.
After losing his son to cancer, he set out to build a better way to guide treatment decisions and reduce guesswork for future patients and families.
That mission now drives First Ascent Biomedical’s work as it expands access to its platform.
Looking AheadThe future of oncology will likely be more personalized, more data-driven, and more precise.
If Functional Precision Medicine continues to gain traction, the shift from “try and hope” to “test and know” could become one of the most meaningful changes in cancer care in decades.
